How To Wake Up Energised And Ready To Rock

Want to wake up feeling energised?

There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning feeling groggy, sluggish and unmotivated. Your alarm is making a horrific noise that startles you into hitting the snooze button and you want nothing more than to just disappear under the covers hoping that the day goes away with it.

That used to be my reality, for years.

Until I discovered the power of ‘The Morning Routine’.

More detail will come on the magic of morning routines – but for now, allow me to share my top 10 tips for waking up bursting with positive energy and ready to tackle your day.

1. Eat A Healthy Diet

This is where you are all rolling your eyes and thinking “ yeah, yeah, tell me something I don’t know” but it is so important that I just HAVE to mention it, and right at the start of the list as well. And you know what a Healthy Diet is, Fruits, Veggies, Wholegrains, Lean Protein and Healthy Fats. Stick to that for the most part and you will be feeling recharged in no time!

2. Exercise

And now for the 2nd most obvious, less exciting tip. Exercise! Movement is one of the BEST ways to feel more energised! It increases the blood flow and gets your body pumped and ready to go. Just 30 minutes of brisk walking/cardio a day will have you feeling more alert. You can be sure that you will wake up brimming with energy if you exercise regularly.

3. Get Organised

Now this is my favourite tip. Oh, I do love getting organised! Truth is, whether you feel the need to be perfectly organised or not, when you don’t get a plan together your mind will be CONSTANTLY working behind the scenes trying to make a ton of decisions about pretty much everything. Whether it is serious decisions (“what the hell do I want to do with my life?”) or something simple (“What shall I have for tea tonight”) the mind is constantly working on making decisions. It exhausting and constantly draining your energy. I think the experts call it Decision Fatigue? You might not think it’s responsible for your need to flop onto the sofa after work but trust me, tiny decision after tiny decision you are wearing yourself out. So, if you can help your mind out and get clear on your tasks/responsibilities/to-dos for the next day, your mind can breathe a sigh of relief and chill out, allowing you to to enjoy the rest of your evening/night.

4. Actually Get A Decent Night’s Sleep

The BEST way to wake up energised. To ensure you do this every single day, you NEED to establish a night routine. Set yourself a bedtime. So many people don’t have a bedtime. They go to bed after they have fallen asleep watching Netflix and wake up to ‘Are you still watching?’. We are adamant that young children have a bedtime, yet we don’t think about setting one for ourselves?! Research shows that most adults need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep. Teenagers need even more than that! So do the math. You know when you have to wake up every morning, so count back 7 or 8 hours and make sure you are heading to bed or winding down for bed at that time. Simples.

5. Breathe

Open a window or go outside and take a deep breath of fresh air as soon as you wake. You will feel so refreshed and it will really help to wake you up.

6. Hydrate

Imagine how rubbish you would feel if you spent a whole day having nothing at all to drink. No tea, no coffee, no water, nothing! There is that slug feeling again, huh? Well, that is exactly what you do while you are sleeping for 8 hours. Your body wakes up seriously dehydrated. Aim for 1 pint/500ml of water as soon as you get up to wake up energised.

7. Make Your Bed

This one is for mental energy! Making your bed gives you this enormous feeling of accomplishment. I don’t know the science behind it, but trust me, it works! Start by making your bed and you will be ready to tackle anything the day throws at you. You HAVE to trust me on this one.

8. Drink A Hot Beverage

Now that you have got your body up and moving, it is essential to take a little bit of ‘me’ time. Make yourself a nice hot beverage. I know most people can’t function until they have had a tea or coffee. However, switch up your drink of choice if you can and try to include green tea every now and then. There are so many health benefits to drinking green tea, plus, it makes you feel proper zen!

9. Meditate

I meditate for a few minutes every morning. It has been proven that daily meditation is especially helpful for overall health. It reduces stress and anxiety and helps with organisation of the mind. I was skeptical when I first started doing this but it has done wonders for my mental health. I reflect on the day ahead and what I need to get done (which you figured out/listed last night in step 3 of course!) and generally get hyped and excited for my day. Great for an energy boost.

10. Gratitude

There have been countless studies which prove how gratitude reduces stress levels. Be grateful for all that you have in life and give thanks. It will shift your focus and bring you right into the present moment and ready to hop, skip and jump into your day.
